How Trekker Can Reach Vaishno Devi Bhawan From Katra?
There are numerous ways that a trekker can follow to reach from Katra to the Maa Vaishno Devi Bhawan. Pilgrims sometimes hire ponies, palkis, helicopters, and electric vehicles. Here is the en route to Maa Vaishno Devi Bhawan details:
Trekking
Most of the devotees feel trekking is the best way to reach Maa Vaishno Devi Bhawan. They can choose one of three pathways. First, an old track which begins from Darshani Darwaza and encompasses Ban Ganga, Charan Paduka, Ardhkuwari, Himkoti, and Sanjichhat. This is one of the simplest and feasible ways to get there. Second, the route also begins from Darshani Darwaza and encompasses Ban Ganga and Charan Paduka. It starts from below Ardhkuwari near the Indraprastha viewpoint. It is somehow shorter route and ponies are not allowed from here. Third, the new trekking road starts from Tarakote, and this also doesn’t allow ponies and palkis. It is a ramp-designed route and linked to the Ban Ganga and Ardhkuwari trek.
Helicopter
Pilgrims wishing to undertake the Vaishno Devi Yatra by air can opt for the helicopter service that operates between Katra and Sanjichhat. This aerial route significantly shortens the journey, as Sanjichhat is located just 2.5 kilometers from the holy cave. Tickets can be booked online through the official website of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Reservations open 60 days in advance, and passengers are required to carry valid identification, address proof, and the same debit/credit card used for booking. Failure to produce any of these may result in denied boarding.
For those preferring offline reservations, tickets can also be purchased at the Current-Heli ticket counter in Katra. Availability is on a first-come, first-served basis, and a valid photo ID, along with other travel documents, must be presented. Pilgrims can book either one-way or round-trip tickets. Notably, a round-trip (Katra–Sanjichhat–Katra) ticket also grants VIP access for Darshan. However, single-leg tickets, whether Katra to Sanjichhat or vice versa, do not include VIP Darshan privileges.
Pony/ Palki
Pilgrims from Katra can hire a horse or pony, or a palki from Darshani Darwaza, which is the starting point to reach the holiest sojourn to Ardhkuwari or Maa Vaishno Devi Bhawan. Sometimes, pilgrims stay at Ardhkuwari for a night and then begin a 6km journey either on foot or on the Palki itself.
What to do after Vaishno Devi Darshan
After offering prayer in the sanctum, many devotees like to take some peaceful moments and inculcate the spiritual vibrations at the Bhawan. You can also go to the Bhairon Temple, situated about 2.5 km uphill from the main cave shrine. It is said the pilgrimage remains unfulfilled if one does not pay respect there. There are battery-operated vehicles and ponies for the uphill journey in case one finds walking difficult. On the way back, one can take another route to see varied scenic views and quieter trails. For shopping or spiritual souvenirs, the local markets at Bhawan and Katra sell holy prasad, idols, rudrakshas, and other Mata Vaishno Devi memorabilia.
